Alphera's Hermes Halloween Costume

Description

This is for the Halloween contest being held by :icondaughterofthehunt10: of :iconfantasychallenges: in which we were to make a Halloween costume for our Challenge Character there (or, just of anyone if someone isn't participating in the model challenge but still wants to do the monthly contest) that would fit in in either a human-world costume party, OR a fantastical creatures costume party.  (So, no modern-day references if it's in the fantasy world one.)

I thought about this one for a while, and honestly, I wasn't coming up with much until this evening when I hit upon the idea of dressing her up like Hermes from Greek Mythology, since Alphera IS a pegasus, and Hermes also had a wing theme going on.  With that in mind, I went full Greek on her, and finally managed to alter that one drapy piece into a toga type thing.  I just had fun with her hair, since there's no indications of what type of hairstyle Hermes might have worn, and this is a gender-bent version anyway.  The winged-sandals weren't too hard to make, but his trademark Caduceus (the golden staff which has the twined serpents and the wings) took a bit of figuring-out.

And, just for the hey of it, here's a little bit of story involving our lovely Pegasus...

Alphera had thought about it long and hard.  The Witch of the Woods had made it known to them that for that one night out of the year, the one the Humans called "All Hallows Eve", she would give them appropriate disguises if they wanted to cross-over and partake of the Humans' merry-making.  The trouble was, that night was also a celebration night for the magical folk, and several of her relatives would probably be there, and would expect her to be there too.  But the thing was... she had always had an insatiable curiosity, (something which had gotten her into trouble more than once) and she wondered just what it would be like to join the Humans in their revels, just this once.  But, what would she wear?  She wasn't terribly familiar with their culture, and though she'd heard bits and pieces here and there, it wasn't enough for her to feel comfortable trying to dress as something modern to them.  But, after pondering for some while, she hit upon the idea of using something from the Ancient Times, what they referred to as Greek Mythology.  It was, after all, where her great-great-great-great-great-great-and-a-lot-more-times-great-Grandsire, Pegasus had come from.  Thinking to use some clever pun involving wings, she settled on basing her costume on the Messenger of the Gods, Hermes.  (She had briefly considered Icarus, since he was famed for having worn wings also, but for one, she didn't want to make ANOTHER set of fake wings, and she certainly wasn't about to use her real ones, and for another, he had been rather silly to fly too high after having been warned by his father, and she didn't want to associate herself with an incompetent flyer like that!)  So, she got some lovely soft silvery-looking fabric which she fashioned into a short toga with a braided golden rope belt, then she sweet-talked one of her smithing friends into making her some small golden-colored wings which she could attach to some golden sandals she already had.  The really difficult part had been fashioning the Caduceus, but after a lot of work, and a little swearing, she managed to get it looking how she wanted it.

Then night of the festival had finally come, and she carefully snuck towards the woods where she knew the Witch awaited those who wanted to cross-over.  She knew most of her family wouldn't approve of her going, but she just HAD to!  She didn't know if she'd get another opportunity like this again.  When she came up to the Witch, the stately woman, gave her an approving nod, and a firm warning not to morph into either of her other forms while over there.  And... to have fun.  Alphera flashed her a joyful smile before heading off to the human town.  Already she could see the lights illuminating the sky ahead, and with mounting excitement, she made her towards what she hoped would be a night to remember.

(So, yes, Alphera is going to the Human Town, for fun and festivities.  When she hears about the costume contest, she would definitely shrug and decide to join in, even if she's not too sure if she would win or not.  She figures she won't get another chance like this, and she might as well live it up.  Oh, and she finds she has a real knack for the game "bobbing for apples".  It doesn't hurt that apples are one of her favorite things to eat ever.)

You made a wonderful work! Everything looks just as good as the game allows! I like the accuracy of the image, especially how you made her dress and hairstyle :).
